The Way I See It

An Honest Smuggler

Long ago, James the smuggler was leading a donkey with large bundles of straw on its back. An experienced border inspector spotted James coming toward the border. “Stop, sir. What is your business here?” he asked James. “I am an honest smuggler,” James replied with a smile. “Well, I need to search those straw bundles. If I find something, you are required to pay a border fee,” the border agent said. “No problem,” James replied. “You won’t find anything in those bundles.”

The inspector searched the straw thoroughly but couldn’t find anything. He was suspicious, yet he let James pass the border. The next day, James came to the border again with his straw-carrying donkey. The border agent thought “I’ll get him for sure this time,” as he thoroughly searched the straw, James’ clothing, and the donkey’s harness. But once again he came up empty-handed and let James pass. This happened again and again for many years.

After the border inspector retired, he ran into James and asked, “It’s been driving me crazy for years… I must know what you were smuggling across the border!” James simply smiled at him and said, “donkeys.”

Here’s the way I see it: The only thing predictable about life is its unpredictability. Give us a call if you’d like help ensuring your marketing efforts don’t feel like marketing.

Make a Splash With Creative Overprinting Techniques
UNDERWHELMED? TRY OVERPRINTING!

Creating dimension in a one-dimensional print project can take some serious creative brainpower. Generally, printed items are planned with colors that do not go on top of each other, as this can sometimes cause an unexpected effect or colors to look "muddy."

With overprinting, however, you can work with your designer and printer to make a conscious decision to mix colors together by printing one on top of the other to form a new and interesting level of detail. While the final result depends on how your project is implemented, overprinting can provide a measure of depth that is often missing in projects that are printed on a flat piece of paper. See how creative overprinting techniques can be worked into your next print project!

Knockout vs. Overprint

Traditional design software automatically creates a knockout of any text or lines that are overlapping one another, so you're able to see the crisp, clear edges in your printed product just as you see them on your screen.

Knockout vs. Overprint

If the colors are overprinted, or overlapped, you have the opportunity to create an additional color and some added excitement besides. Type is one of the key items used in an overprint situation. While knockout text can be impactful, overprinting adds some dimension or thickness to the paint that is visible to the brain, even if your eyes don't register the difference. This slight trick of thickness makes the image appear to jump off the page and creates a completely new look from traditional printing.

Order of Colors Matters

One thing that's important to keep in mind with overprinting is the order in which the colors are applied to the canvas. If you're purposefully overprinting several colors, you wouldn't want to design your project with the lightest color in the back, for instance. The darker foreground color could easily overwhelm the lighter shade, causing an unexpected result. The colors will be printed in exactly the same order as the artwork, which is why it is critical to have someone who truly understands design and printing create your artwork to ensure a consistent result for your printed materials.

Come See Chicago

Just like every other creative approach to printing, you don't want to go overboard with overprinting. However, when used judiciously, you can create some really intriguing designs that would be much more difficult or expensive were you to use traditional printing techniques. A perfect example is with PMS colors where there might be a color match charge for each color. With overprinting techniques, you can technically get a third color without having to pay for an additional imprint!

Integrating Social and Print Marketing
EXPAND YOUR SOCIAL EFFORTS WITH PRINT

If you’re looking for a creative way to boost your social media efforts, print marketing is and always will be a powerful way to communicate your message. Here are a few ways to expand your social efforts with print:

  • Create labels to boost your social awareness and affix to mailings, packages, receipts, and more. Consider providing your URLs or usernames (such as your twitter handle), as well as inspiring reasons why they should join your social community (such as contests, weekly tips, or exclusive offers). Also include social links on business cards, letterhead, flyers, brochures, and other print marketing.

  • Send direct mail coupons or promos as a physical reminder since it’s easy to forget something seen for only a few seconds on social media.

  • Use social reviews and testimonials in your print marketing efforts. If you received 5-stars and an outstanding review, feature it in your print newsletter or relevant marketing flyer.

  • Use social media to give customers a heads up to expect something exciting in their mailboxes, such as a VIP invite or exclusive offer.

  • Create a sign-up for your latest product catalog on social media and mail it to interested parties.

  • Promote an event or upcoming sale with direct mail and refer readers to follow you on social media for details.

  • Consider creating personalized URLs to engage prospects from printed collateral.

  • Drive readers from print to digital with apps such as Clickable Paper, which features recognition image matching technology and provides immediate one-touch access to multiple online resources by merely pointing a smartphone or a tablet at any offline surface.

  • Reward your social media followers with exclusive coupons and other promos sent to their mailbox.

Calendar Time Travel Tips
LOCK DOWN YOUR APPOINTMENTS

If you've ever traveled for a business trip, chances are, you know the frustration of appointments moving on your calendar while changing time zones. Here are a few calendar time travel tips to help lock down your appointments.

  • Android/Google Calendar users can go into Google Calendar/Menu/Settings and turn off “Use device time zone” to stop appointments from shifting.

  • iPhone users can also schedule meetings with the time zone they occur in. For example, if you have a meeting in Chicago, you can set the time zone to Central. Your meeting time will be accurate when you arrive and your phone updates to the local time.

  • As an alternative, Time Zone Override controls can stop your calendar appointments from shifting to the local time when you travel. On an Android device, you can go to Settings/Date and Time and turn off the Automatic Date and Time function to set the date, time, and time zone manually. On an iOS device, you can override the time zone controls by going to Settings/Calendar/Time Zone Override.
